A new baby sunbonnet pattern! From me! For you!

August 19, 2010

Gracie’s hat collection is getting to be downright absurd, especially for a baby that used to hate hats! Sewing dresses and other outfits for a baby is fun, but sewing hats satisfies the heuristic side of my maker-ly self since she rarely steps outside without one (granted, she rarely “steps” outside anyway. How about, she rarely goes outside without one, for you sticklers of the bunch?).

Here’s the latest batch to join the bunch. Grace will only wear one, but in true Sula fashion it took me five prototypes to create…a free Seamery original pattern! Enjoy!

Baby Sunbonnet pattern (pdf)

It is sized to fit a 6-12 month baby, but has a tie to make it somewhat adjustable.

Please note that you’ll need to be able to use a “borderless” print setting to get the full pattern pieces. Also be aware that I’m no pro, so these are not computer generated, but slavishly drawn, tested, and retraced by hand. I’d also like to mention that I am happy for you to observe my copyright as detailed on the pattern (basically, no making money off of my work. Nonprofits, contact me directly).

Let me know how it goes for you! I would love to hear from you. I’ve also revised my Baby Sun Hat pattern too, if you are interested.

I’m making the sun hat for my grand daughter, but I’m stuck. Before cutting, do I need to add a seam allowance to the pattern or is it already in the pattern? Thanks. I love this little hat.

So sorry for the confusion! The seam allowance is already included in the pattern: 1/2″ to make a 1/4″ flat felled seam for the tops and 1/2″ to make a 1/4″ french seam for attaching the top to the ruffle.

I’d love to hear how it goes for you or anyone else who gives it a go!

Hello!! I want to know if I should cut the part that says “cut on fold” or I should make it dubble, like it looks in the picture? Thanks

Hi there! I am at the part in the pattern where I am making the brim and I am lost. You say to fold the brim wrong sides together but then fold the ends right sides together and stitch with 1/4″. Will the piece just be temporarily twisted until the end pieces are turned? . Just want to make sure that I am reading correctly.

I guess just the part about folding the same piece two different ways is confusing..thanks 🙂

Hi Elizabeth! I think you are right, but let me see if I can do a better job: You fold the brim wrong sides together and press, then unfold it (momentarily) to stitch the ends with the right sides together. That way when you turn the brim right side out again and push out the corners, you already have nice finished edges for the brim.

Thanks for taking the time to write, and I hope that it goes well for you! All the best–sula
